Air Force Funeral Services: FAQs

What do I do when the airmen salute?

The military renders a salute in a variety of situations. If you are not in the military, you are asked to place your right hand over your heart when the military salutes during a military funeral. You can take your cue from what the military members are doing to know when to render the proper salute.

The cemetery representative, who represents Arlington at every service, would be delighted to answer any particular questions on this matter.

What does the military do, and in what order?

This depends on the type of funeral service. Depending on the rank of the individual, as well as other distinctions earned while on active duty, the order may vary. The cemetery representative can give you details on which type of service it will be, as can the interments section at Arlington. You can also look at the different types of funerals here at this Web site to get an idea of what is normally done at Arlington.

What about music in the chapel?

Musical selections for funeral services in the chapel will be coordinated by the officiating chaplain and the chapel organist. Music used for funeral services should normally be religious in nature. This is due to the fact that a chapel service is a religious service. Please contact ANC's Chaplain Section at 703-614-0344 if you have any specific questions regarding music.

Do I have to have a Chapel service at ANC?

No. Many people have services before burial at Arlington National Cemetery. In most religious traditions, one primary funeral ceremony, such as a memorial service, is sufficient. Also, because of varying security conditions and concerns, additional time may be required for guests to gain entry into Fort Myer's Old Post Chapel.

Are there any special uniform requirements?

ANC Air Force chaplains wear the ceremonial uniform. However, as visiting clergy you are free to wear the uniform or other religious attire you deem appropriate for such an occasion. For more specific guidelines or if you have additional questions, please call (877) 907-8585 and ask for the Air Force Chaplains office.

Where can I get more information?

You can contact ANC's Air Force Chaplain section at 703-695-4584 for more information regarding services here at ANC. Please remember, however, that this office plays no role whatsoever in determining eligibility, in scheduling, or in determining what honors will be rendered.
