Changing of the Guard: Seasonal Schedule

From Oct. 1 through March 31, the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier takes place once an hour, on the hour. Guard changes at 30-minute intervals will resume in April.

Security Guard Positions Open to Veterans

Opportunities are open at the Arlington National Cemetery and are waiting for you! Our Security Guard positions offer valuable experience, training opportunities and excellent benefits.

  • Perform installation access control for pedestrians and vehicles utilizing standard operating procedures, written orders and regulatory requirement as a guide to access determination for a wide range of unique circumstances.
  • Provide Security support for domestic and international dignitaries conducting visits to Arlington National Cemetery, high profile funeral services, and special events which take place throughout the year.

Duties

  • This position functions as the first layer of defense in a security-in-depth concept to deter, detect, delay, assess, respond, and document unauthorized access to Army installations restricted to the general public.
  • Responsible for preserving the life, health and safety of government personnel.
  • Responsible for safeguarding Army property and technologies against such threats as: unlawful entry, sabotage, espionage, theft, accidental or willful damage, and destruction on installations.
  • Provide significant support of the overall installation Antiterrorism/ Force Protection capability by providing the emergency base closure, active shooter response, and physical security emergency response.
  • Authenticate identification through use of electronic Automated Installation Entry (AIE) identification cards, badges, biometric automated records, verbal questioning, and other means.
  • Exercise crowd control, implement contingency plans, and execute crowd control in situations that may become violent or unruly as a result of planned or impromptu demonstrations.
  • Regulate pedestrian and vehicular traffic to prevent accidents and to ease congestion and parking problems.

Minimum requirements:

  • High school diploma of GED
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship
  • Direct deposit account
  • Completion of a background check
  • Age 18 or older
  • Proof of Veteran status; DD-214 submission
  • Must meet the requirements under the Lautenberg Amendment/Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968
