Turf Renovations

turf restoration 2

ANC renovates approximately 30 acres of turf each year. Renovations recently began in Section 64. Silt fences have been installed to mitigate soil erosion, and “Turf Renovation in Progress” signs have been places to inform visitors. Please, limit walking in these areas as much as possible, but do not hesitate to visit or place flowers at a gravesite.

This process involves removing the old turf and weeds, tilling the soil, re-grading the gravesites, and sowing new grass seed. The result will be a much healthier, thicker turf, and ground that is more level. With favorable weather, new turf should begin germinating in early autumn.

In the coming weeks, the same activities will take place in Section 1 and parts of Sections 36 & 36A, as well as Sections A-D and J at U.S. Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery in D.C. Additionally, ~2 acres of turf to the west of ANC’s Welcome Center will be renovated and sodded.
