Women’s Equality Day Tour of Arlington National Cemetery

8/17/2022

In honor of Women’s Equality Day on Friday, August 26, join Arlington National Cemetery’s (ANC) official historians for a public walking tour highlighting women’s lives and legacies at ANC. Visitors will learn about the pathbreaking women buried and memorialized here, as well as women who impacted the cemetery’s development. The tour will reveal how these women broke gender barriers, served their nation, created new roles for women in military and civic life, and contributed to the ongoing struggle for women’s equality.

Topics will include women’s suffrage, female military pioneers, women in military medicine, Arlington’s Freedman’s Village and much more. Stops will span well-known sites such as the Nurses Memorial and the grave of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in addition to lesser-visited places that reveal women’s often overlooked presence on this military landscape.

The tour will meet at the Information Desk inside the ANC Welcome Center. It will utilize an open-air tram to move throughout the cemetery, but it will still involve extended walking on uneven terrain in the heat. The tour will end at the Military Women’s Memorial, where visitors will have the opportunity to disembark and visit the Military Women’s Memorial.

Please note: This is not a standard tour of ANC and it will not stop at many of the major sites such as the Kennedy gravesite and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
