The new burner installed at the Eternal Flame last month utilizes multiple sensors and a control system to ensure safe operation. The system includes a sensor to verify flame operation; if that sensor fails to detect a flame, the control system will stop the gas flow for safety. This process ensures natural gas is not released into the atmosphere.
The flame sensor has malfunctioned and the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are identifying a possible replacement or other alternatives to keep the flame lit. In the interim, the temporary flame has been relit at the site.
