ANC Starts Interagency and Public Consultation Process for Removal of the Confederate Memorial

As required by Congress and implemented by the Secretary of Defense, Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) is required to remove the Confederate Memorial at ANC and has initiated a process to prepare for the careful removal and relocation of its Confederate Memorial, located in Section 16 of the cemetery. All bronze elements of the memorial will be relocated.  


Memorial Bridge and Circle Closure, Sat. March 18

From 6 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Sat. March 18, Memorial Bridge and Circle will be closed due to a half-marathon. This will impact all traffic coming to Arlington National Cemetery’s main entrance.

On Monday, March 6, at 8 p.m. EST/7 p.m. CST, Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) will be partnering with the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) and the National WWI Museum and Memorial to present a live webinar on the history of American commemorative practices.


“Remember the Maine”: 125th Anniversary Discussion

January 26, 2023

On Wednesday, February 15 at 1 p.m., an online panel of historians and archivists will discuss the sinking of the USS Maine, a battleship built between 1888 and 1895, which was sent to Havana in January 1898 to protect American interests during the longstanding revolt of the Cubans against the colonial Spanish government. On the evening of February 15, 1898, the Maine sank when its forward gunpowder magazines exploded. Nearly three-quarters of the battleship's crew died as a result of the explosion. While the cause of this great tragedy is still unsettled, contemporary American popular opinion blamed Spain, and the Spanish-American War followed within a few months.


Arlington National Cemetery Renews Level III Arboretum Status

Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) is proud to announce the renewal of its Level III Arboretum accreditation, initially designated in June 2018. Only 45 renowned institutions worldwide, including five cemeteries, maintain this prestigious accreditation.


Columbia Pike Closure

ARLINGTON, VA—Arlington National Cemetery (ANC), in conjunction with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Norfolk District, the Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division (EFLHD) and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), announces that a portion of VA-244 Columbia Pike—between South Joyce Street and the VDOT facility located immediately east of South Oak Street—will be closed beginning January 23, 2023. The closure is due to ongoing construction as part of the cemetery’s Southern Expansion project.


Annual Wreaths Out Event: Saturday, January 21

ARLINGTON, VA – Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) and Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery (SAHNC) in Washington, D.C. will hold their annual removal of wreaths, known as Wreaths Out, on Saturday, January 21, beginning at 8 a.m. Thousands of visitors are expected to help remove approximately 257,000 wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery and approximately 14,000 at SAHNC. The high volume of visitors at ANC may create traffic congestion and delays on nearby streets and at the cemetery’s entrances.

ARLINGTON, VA – On Sunday, Dec. 11, the annual Wreaths Across America (WAA) Family Pass Holder Day will be held at Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) and the Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery (SAHNC). From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., family pass holders are invited to place a wreath at their loved one’s grave ahead of the National Wreaths Across America Day.
